Biography

John Bushemi was educated at Indiana University and attended Indiana University Mauer School of Law – Bloomington. Mr. Bushemi focuses his practice on representing municipal and local governmental entities, as well as individuals and businesses, in a wide range of matters before state and federal courts, including personal injury, business and corporations, real estate and zoning. Mr. Bushemi has 29 years of experience serving in numerous local government attorney posts including East Chicago City Council Attorney, East Chicago Redevelopment Commission Attorney, Hobart City Attorney, Hobart Sanitary District Attorney, Hobart City Council Attorney, Merrillville Conservancy District Attorney, Merrillville Town Attorney, Merrillville Redevelopment Commission Attorney, Merrillville Police Commission Attorney, Hammond Public Safety Attorney, Lake County Sheriff’s Attorney, Porter County Assessor’s Attorney, Schererville BZA and Plan Commission Attorney, Schererville Police Commission Attorney and Lowell Town Attorney. In addition to his trial work, Mr. Bushemi has significant appellate court experience.

Mr. Bushemi served as an Indiana State Senator for fifteen (15) years (1976-1990). He was 28 years old when elected, the youngest member of the Indiana Senate at that time. During his years of public service, Mr. Bushemi developed a reputation as a hard working, respected and effective state lawmaker. He was a leading advocate for adoption of the Hoosier Lottery program. He championed numerous Northwest Indiana development projects. Mr. Bushemi served on a number of Indiana Senate committees, including the Finance, Judiciary, and Pensions and Labor Committee. He also served as a member of the Indiana Commission on Aging and the Aged, the Indiana Commission on Autism, the Indiana Judicial Study Commission, the Indiana Code Revision Commission, the National Commission on State Government Operations and the Indiana Casino Gaming Study Commission. Mr. Bushemi is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions for his service in the Indiana State Senate.

Mr. Bushemi serves as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Valparaiso University School of Law. He teaches courses in Local Government Law and Legislation and Regulation.

He serves the community as a member of the Andrean High School Foundation Board of Directors, the Indiana Society of Chicago Foundation Board of Directors, the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority Board of Directors, the Indiana Municipal Lawyers Association Board of Directors, and serves as an Advocacy Ambassador for Autism Speaks.
