On April 18, 2017 Attorney Alfredo Estrada proposed the adoption of a Welcoming City Ordinance to the City of Gary. Estrada has an unique insight into the needs of the undocumented community through his community ties and immigration practice.
The Welcoming City Ordinance, presented by Estrada, requires the adopting municipality to review all current municipal documents to determine whether immigrant status is required in regards to the municipal benefit, increases communication with immigrant residents, and appoints an official to review U Visa certification applications.
